Design Technology at Dubmire
At Dubmire, we want all of our children to develop practical skills and knowledge by the implementation of project based DT. We aim to inspire children to explore their own abilities and celebrate the journey they embark on to create a final outcome.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Design Technology forms part of the learning children acquire under the ‘Knowledge and Understanding of the World' branch of the Foundation Stage curriculum. Children learn through first-hand experiences which may look like building, stirring or simply using a range of different tools. They will be encouraged to explore, observe, solve problems, think critically, make decisions and to talk about why they have made their decisions.
As children move into KS1 and KS2 these skills will be taught explicitly with a project in mind and the chance to evaluate at each stage of the process. Children will be hooked in with a design brief before researching and planning their next steps. They will then have a chance to practice key skills before applying them to their final project. Children’s final outcomes are celebrated and shared with parents/carers in the way of galleries, celebration events and competitions; providing children with opportunities to confidently showcase their talents and abilities; resulting in enthusiastic future designers, engineers, architects and chefs!
Cross Curricular Projects
Fairy Treehouses
As a school we decided to make tree house sculptures. Following a short introductory assembly, and with a number of parent helpers and TAs present, children started to make sculptures! The focus was on how to manipulate and construct materials, balance elements, and to “design through making”. The children kept up the making for the whole morning, and then we took the tree houses onto the field to enjoy.
Ice-Cream Vans
In Summer 2023, Computing and Design Technology leads from across the Trust, planned and facilitated a Stem event based around the theme of Ice Creams.
In small groups, children from our three schools in the Academy Trust and Easington Lane Primary School used their design and technology skills to plan and construct an ice-cream van from a range of materials. In addition, a further group of children used their coding skills to create, test and debug an algorithm using Crumble controllers to enable their group’s ice-cream van to travel between the four schools to deliver ice creams in the quickest time.
